Together We Protect - An extension of Zoomarine’s mission
Since its foundation in 1991, Zoomarine has been a theme park committed to promoting positive behavioural change towards the animal world and environmental conservation, with a particular focus on marine species. Built around the values of EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN, PRESERVE, DISCOVER and DEVELOP, the park combines moments of family fun with learning and awareness-raising experiences, contributing to a greater understanding of the importance of protecting species and their natural habitats.
To this end, Zoomarine develops and supports projects in the fields of Conservation, Research and Environmental Education, as well as a range of community engagement and social responsibility initiatives.
Learning directly from animals, in an environment that allows for close encounters, can be a life-changing experience. We believe that this connection can foster greater respect for wildlife and encourage the adoption of environmentally responsible behaviours that are essential for the protection of species.
As a means of providing direct support in emergencies involving certain wild animals, Zoomarine’s Porto d’Abrigo was established in 2002. It was the first marine species rehabilitation centre in Portugal and, in collaboration with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), has already rehabilitated and returned hundreds of aquatic and marine animals to the wild.
More than just a vision, the Together We Protect Philosophy is a true guiding principle that shapes Zoomarine’s actions in support of communities and the environment, extending its mission of environmental education beyond the theme park.
This approach recognises the interdependence between society, the environment and biodiversity, promoting collective action towards the sustainability of the planet, its species and their habitats.
Through initiatives in the fields of environmental education and conservation, supported by a multidisciplinary team with extensive scientific and practical experience, Zoomarine reinforces its role as a guardian of biodiversity. This commitment is reflected in the development and support of research and conservation projects, environmental education programmes and awareness-raising initiatives aimed at different audiences.
These actions aim to make a positive impact on the Algarve community. Highlights include EDUCar, an environmental education project on wheels, community tree-planting and beach-cleaning activities, volunteering initiatives and support for organisations that care for dogs and cats, among other actions that contribute to a more aware community committed to protecting the environment and biodiversity.
Environmental Sustainability
Always at the heart of its mission, and since its foundation, Zoomarine has adopted innovative and pioneering strategies that effectively reduce its environmental impact and promote the sustainable use of resources.
Over the years, this commitment has translated into the implementation of solutions that prioritise energy and water efficiency, waste reduction and recovery, the responsible use of natural resources, and the adoption of more sustainable practices across different areas of the park’s operations.
More than simply reducing its environmental footprint, Zoomarine continuously seeks new ways to protect and preserve the planet, integrating sustainability into its decision-making and helping to raise awareness among visitors, employees and partners about the importance of nature conservation.
