“Montanha Verde” Operation
A community purpose
In the aftermath of the fires that broke out in the Algarve in 2016, “OPERAÇÃO MONTANHA VERDE” was born, a project that brought together volunteers with the aim of reforesting the burned area, the action continues to be repeated annually.
This action was born after the severe fires that occurred in the Algarve in the summer of 2016, which resulted in a total burned area of 5,801 hectares, a significant loss of biodiversity in three neighbouring municipalities. The first edition aimed to help protect Portugal’s natural heritage by reforesting part of the burned area. Over the years, the operation has become an environmental awareness event, with and for the local community.
Operation Green Mountain has already made it possible to plant more than 128,000 native trees and plants in various areas of the Algarve. This is a major step forward in strengthening the green cover that the Algarve region needs to recover in a sustainable manner, as it is trees that enable water retention in soils that are becoming increasingly dry and arid.
It is very important to note that this is the only way to ensure the coexistence of communities, natural habitats, and animal species.
Miyawaki Method – Forest for all
From 2024, Zoomarine has partnered with Nativawaky to plant a Miyawaki mini-forest , a different planting method that reflects the native forest ecosystems of a region. This is achieved through dense planting rich in biodiversity, contributing to the rapid growth of these forests, which can reach a plant survival efficiency rate of 97% after approximately three years, becoming self-sustainable.
Thus, by switching to this type of planting, greater assurance of species survival is achieved, and communities are brought closer to nature.
