This specie is native to Socorro Island, in the Revillagigedo Archipelago, off the west coast of Mexico. It was last seen in the wild in 1972. Factors related to human occupation of the island and the introduction of mammals into its habitat have led to it now being Extinct in the Wild.
Today, the Socorro dove can only be found in zoos in Europe and America, taking part of breeding programmes to ensure the species’ survival.

Zoomarine's role in the Socorro-Dove project
The first specimens of this species arrived at Zoomarine in 2021, coming from parks in the Czech Republic and Spain, and are part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).
It is hoped that, in the future, the species can be reintroduced into its natural habitat.
At Zoomarine, you can visit this species in the Americas habitat.
