The rehabilitation of these animals contributes directly to their conservation in the wild.
The mission goes beyond treatment: helping these animals represents a unique opportunity to understand and identify the main causes that threaten their survival, contributing to science and conservation initiatives.
Porto d’Abrigo also promotes changes in human behaviour. Visits to the Centre’s physical facilities offer visitors an opportunity to understand the consequences of overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction and other threats to these animals, fostering awareness and responsibility for their protection.
Porto d’Abrigo has a dedicated permanent and specialised team of veterinary nurses and marine biologists, responsible for monitoring and ensuring the welfare of all animals in rehabilitation, from rescue to return to the wild. The team of veterinary doctors at Zoomarine applies its knowledge to diagnose and treat the medical conditions of rescued animals.
The Rehabilitation Centre also benefits from the ongoing collaboration of Zoomarine’s multidisciplinary teams, covering areas such as Water Quality Control, Equipment Maintenance and IT, among others.
